Biography of Emily Kay

Emily Kay (born August 13, 1974) is a German author known for her upcoming vampire romance trilogy “Eulenflucht” which was influenced by the song “Geisterfahrer” of Tokio Hotel and the planned angel romance trilogy, which will be dedicated to Bill Kaulitz, who inspired her for the angel main character when he appeared on the catwalk for the DSquared2 Fashion Show in Milan.

Emily Kay was born in the Ruhr Valley in Germany and is still living there. After school she studied English and German Literature. Emily had never written a novel before “Eulenflucht – Durch die Nacht”. But all of her life she felt that the day would come to bring her thoughts out on a paper. This day came in February 2009 when she woke up and knew that she will begin to write her first book in 2009. She collected all of her thoughts and visions on tons of paper and started writing on “Eulenflucht – Durch die Nacht” in September 2009.

Inspiration

Emilys writing is strongly influenced by “the right music”. She cannot imagine to write without having a certain playlist. Bands which appear most often in her playlist are Tokio Hotel (of course), Morrissey, The Smiths, Oasis, The Verve, Richard Ashcroft, The Cure, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, U2, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, The Doors, 30 Seconds to Mars, The Mission, Nirvana, Linkin Park, Foo Fighters, The Ramones, The Clash and 80s stuff.

Personal Interests

Emily is strongly into music, movies, fashion, tattoos and of course books. She likes running through the forest and visiting concerts and jumble sales to look for story tapes and vintage stuff. Besides she loves soccer and handball and extreme sports. She is a vegetarian and supports PETA and GREENPEACE. Her personal style of fashion is strongly influenced by the rockabilly, punk and gothic scene.

Recent INTERVIEW! " Fantasy Fans' Interview with Emily Kay"

What has "Tokio Hotel", the little vampire Rüdiger von Schlotterstein and "The Lost Boys" in common? The answer is easy: Emily Kay, who has processed all these sources of inspiration in her novel "Eulenflucht - Durch die Nacht".

And how life goes, nowadays you get very easy in contact with those interesting people. You only need a twitter-acount and the idee fixe, that an interview could be quite interesting.

~~~
Fantasy Fans: Dear Emily, first of all thank you for taking your time for this interview. You believe, that writing is in one's blood. Did you always intend to be a writer or did it develop gradually?
Emily Kay: Actually, I was always writing, albeit more secretly. The stories were never made for others, but rather for me. But it was always my dream to write and achieve an audience. In the summer of 2007 I was seriously thinking for the first time about the idea of writing a book, but then dropped it again.
Fantasy Fans: You can read in your biographie, that from your earliest childhood you were some kind of addicted to writing. Why does it take so long until you finished your first novel?
Emily Kay: Actually, it didn't took a long time to finish the book, I needed the right moment to start . It was very surprising for me. In the begining of 2009 I woke up and in my semiconsciousness i heard a voice, which told me: This year you will start to write "Durch die Nacht". In parallel I saw for a split second a picture from a twilight beach, with a vampire in a curved position. In my brainstorm I went to my desk, wrote down the phrase and tried to fix the key points of this image. So that's the way how "Eulenflucht - Durch die Nacht" started.
Fantasy Fans: Actually, your future readers don't necessarily know, that you are obsessed with vampires since years. How do you feel about the fact, that some might think, that you are only another author, who wants a piece of the great-vampire-cake?
Emily Kay: Firstly, as a child in the 80s I really swallowed the book "Der kleine Vampir" and since then I want my own vampire. Back then my wish even got to the point to open secretly in the night the window of my child-room, hoping that I got a nocturnal visit from a vampire like Anton in the books. Unfortunately this never happened. For this, I froze in my bed for half of the night and then usualy closed the window again. I read these books during my elementary school and they are the reason for being a vampire fan. However, the most dramatic experience I had, was in 1988, when the movie "The Lost Boys" was released in Germany. I do not know how many times I've seen this movie in the cinema on my own. Anyway, I was permanently broke at that time, because I spend all my money to get into the cinema. This film was my personal "Twilight" in the 80s. And since then the vampire fever preyed on my mind. Even today the "The Lost Boys" movie poster hangs on the wall in my apartment. In the 90s I read with enthusiasm all vampire and witches - Books by Anne Rice and the "Diary of a Vampire" books by Lisa J. Smith Of course, I've also seen the movie "Interview with the Vampire." Although I liked the book more than the movie. Then the "Blade" films and over the time I discovered more and more vampire books with which I could fill my bookshelves.
Therefore for me it was always clear that my first book could only be a vampire novel. Of course there are authors who accept commissioned work from publishers to write a book on a specific topic, but for me it would be out of the question. I can only write about things for which my heart bleeds. Anything else would not work. Ultimately, with the "Eulenflucht-Triologie" I fulfill myself a childhood dream to have finally my own vampire, without opening the window at night. ;-)
Fantasy Fans: You say about yourself, that you love vampires. Does that mean all of them, or do you differentiate between the various representations or what do you love most? (for example Heitz' vampires are all evil and deadly, Wards vampires are hot, Meyer's vampires are nice, but the adult reader have to imagine the interesting part by himself?)
Emily Kay: Dark Fantasy, like Heitz does, is not my personal favourite genre. For me it is too gloomy. I'm more a representative of the romantasy, a mixture of Wards and Meyers vampires are probably closest to my vampires. The vampire David from "The Lost Boys" and Damon Salvatore from the "Diary of a Vampire" novels are among my absolute favorites.
Fantasy Fans: Is "Eulenflucht" rather a book for young people or more adresses to adults?
Emily Kay: I would describe it as all-ager, but the booktraders will probably put it to the books for young people.
Fantasy Fans: Do you want to stay in the fantasy genre after the trilogy or is there something totaly different on your mind? And if so, will you stick to the vampires or maybe fairies and elves could appear?
Emily Kay: I would definitely stay in the fantasy genre. Currently I am writing the first book of an angel - trilogy, which has the working title of "Himmelswächter". I would not rule out that in between I will write books beyond the fantasy, but ultimately it will always be Fantastik. Currently I have planned 11 books. Three of them deal with vampires and in the remaining eight books other fantasy - figures are on the loose.
Fantasy Fans: Did you, after you discovered the song on the TH-CD, try to contact the guys? If so, what was their reaction? Do they know that they occur in the book?
Emily Kay: No, until now I'm not in contact with the band. Therefore the Tokio Hotel Fans adopted me enthusastically and I have to say, that I am very impressed by their love and dedication for the band. I had no idea that Tokio Hotel has so well organized and loyal fans. I have a very close contact to the Tokio Hotel and also to the vampire fans. I will continue to maintain this contact, because I am keen on knowing my readers.
Fantasy Fans: What authors or books do you like the best?
Emily Kay: Besides Fantasy I like reading autobiographies, thrillers and funny books. The last autobiography, which I read, was "Just Kids" by Patty Smith, the last thriller was "Shutter Iceland" by Dennis Lehane and the last funny book was "Feindesland" from the series "Hartmut und ich" - from Oliver Uschmann. I like it varried and I'm reading actually all over the place, as the whim takes me.
Fantasy Fans: Do you have specific examples?
Emily Kay: Enid Blyton, definitely. My love for reading began with her and even today I am still reading her books again and again, without getting bored. She was in my eyes a brilliant author, who was repeatedly able to thrill her readers.
Fantasy Fans: Back to "Eulenflucht". You said, that you don't want to reveal too much, so you don't need to answer the question, but it would be quite interesting for our users to know in which direction the story goes?
Emily Kay: It is a romantasy book for teenagers and young (or young at heart) adults, so really an All-Ager. "Eulenflucht - Durch die Nacht" is the first book of a trilogy that takes place in Germany and is linked to a historical event. It is the beginning of a story about an immortal, impossible love between a human and a vampire - a love against all reason.
Fantasy Fans : Who was allowed to read "Eulenflucht" at first?
Emily Kay: My girlfriend Adriana, for whom I dedicated a character in the book, was allowed to read the book from the beginning. Also the support team from Tokio hotel Info was allowed to read half of the book, after they became acquainted of my book and decided immediately to bring my first german support into being. And then, of course, my agent.
Fantasy Fans: How long did it take you to place "Eulenflucht" to an agency and how did you feel at that time?
Emily Kay: Once the people became aware of "Eulenflucht" through the internet, everything went quickly. After the first phone call with my agent, it was almost clear. It was a perfect match.
She liked the same books as I do, we had a lot in common and after she read the manuscript, she offered me a contract. In the meantime even a Mexican teen magazin, similar to the german Bravo, reported about me and "Eulenflucht" and support pages in Spain, Italy, Germany, the United States on Facebook and SchülerVZ came into existence. It was like watching a movie that continues forever.
Fantasy Fans: How did you feel , as you learned, that you agency represent your novel worldwide?
Emily Kay: That was absolutely incredible. I truely got it as recently as the contract was in the mail. I never thought that one of the largest German agency would represent me. My agency also represents other fantasy authors, such as Kai Meyer and Bernhard Hennen. These are obviously very well-known authors from the genre.
Fantasy Fans: Which publishing house and above all when will the first part be released?
Emily Kay: It's not yet confirmed. In the moment my agent is in the midst of negotiations with a big german commercial publishers. As soon as I sign a contract, I will of course inform the fantasy fans immediately.
Fantasy Fans: If you are not writing, what are you doing in you freetime? Do you have a regular job, or a you a full-time author?
Emily Kay: I am a full-time docent for languages, which gives me a lot of fun. In my free time I like to do sports, listen to music, attend concerts or theater plays, collect passionatly radio-plays and of course love to read and write
~~~

We are very happy to support Emily in this way and we keep it rolling about the publication from "Eulenflucht - Durch die Nacht".

Interview with Emily Kay Source-THEurope

As we have heard Emily Kay, a German writer, was inspired by Tokio Hotel and Bill for his trilogy. When the news began to run between the many TH fans wanted to know more about this book, so we made every effort to know more. Me, Patrii of THEurope, I had the pleasure of talking to this nice woman. Hope here you have all the information that you want, enjoy the interview and support this nice writter!

Emily Kay is a German author. She is 35 years old and lives in the Ruhr Valley sourrounded by books and CDs. She is addicted to music, films, sports, tattoos and fantasy literature.

THEurope: How you reacted to the “boom” of you and your book when you said that Bill Kaulitz had inspired you? It was something you expected?

Emily: No. It was only a statement on my twitter account and a topic in my blog on twilight.4fans.net. It’s really overwhelming for me to feel the love of the Tokio Hotel fans and their passion for the band and their support towards creative people who support the idea of the band.

THEurope: Before this happens, did you write anyother book?

Emily: Firstly I studied English and German Literature. But I always kept this dream in my heart to write books one day. I grew up with tons of story tapes (tapes with fairy tales, adventure stories and so on) and books. I always had many books around me before I could read and I always forced my mother to read stories to me. So very soon I discovered books by Enid Blyton and had the wish inside of me to write books like she did one day. By the age of 9 I had the first contact with a vampire children`s novel which is called “The Little Vampire”. I loved this very much and always had the idea to have an own vampire. Sometimes I left the windows open because I hoped to be visited by a vampire (lol). At night I closed the window because it was too cold inside my room. ;-) Then I discovered the films “The Neverending Story” by Michael Ende and “Labyrinth”. During the 80s we had a special cinema day here in my hometown and it cost only 3 DM to watch a movie. So I went there to see LABYRINTH each Sunday for 2 – 3 months. In the end I knew all the words of the movie and became a big David Bowie Fan. But my favorite movie of all time is still THE LOST BOYS. A vampire movie which was released in 1988. This was the most important influence on my vampire addiction. It was the point when I started to read vampire novels. Before I started to write Romantasy books I published learning materials for maths, German and English. So “Eulenflucht – Durch die Nacht” is the first novel I write.

THEurope: Do you know Stephanie Meyer’s book? Would you like your triology to have the same fame as them?

Emily: Of course I read every book from Stephenie Meyer. She is a really good writer and I am looking forward to her next books. I think to expect such a sucess is not realistic. I hope that there are readers who enjoy reading my books and I am thankful when there are a few.

THEurope: How do you know about Tokio Hotel and their music? Is it a music that you use to listen since long time ago?

Emily: I did not know very much about Tokio Hotel until they published HUMANOID. When you have a look on my CDs you will find also German music. My favorite band since 1986 is a German punk band which is called DIE ÄRZTE. So there are all of their CDs. Besides there is music of Robbie Williams, The Cure, Morrissey, The Smiths, Depeche Mode, New Order, The Clash, The Ramones, Oasis, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Linkin Park and other punk, metal, gothic, rock and 80s stuff. Not really a typical collection for Tokio Hotel fans. The first one who got in touch with Tokio Hotel was my mother. I remember one day in 2005 when I visited my parents she switched the TV on and there was a report about TH. She explained to me who this band was and told me their names and that the two guys are twins and so on. I only thought “Okeeee … ” ;-) By the way my mother is 61 years old … I was surprised about her reaction and so I kept the name TH in my mind. Some pupils wore their T-shirts but I still was not interested in TH at this moment.

THEurope: How did Tokio Hotel enter in the books?

Emily: Last October I was surfing on the internet and read an article about HUMANOID. The reporter mentioned that the songs sound like Depeche Mode and I really could not imagine this. I mean TH and Depeche? No. So I kept on reading and then I saw the name Guy Chambers. Every Robbie Wiliams fan knows this name and so I did. I was really curious what TH and Guy did together. So listened to some music samples. I really was astonished because it was good music. Then I decided to go to a record store to buy the album. I had problems to decide to buy the German or English version. In the end I bought both. ;-)

THEurope: Why you say “Geisterfahrer” is the soundtrack of the book?

Emily: Yeah. This was like a wake up call when I came back home from the record store. I played the CD and really got big chickenpocks all over my body when I listened to Geisterfahrer. This was the plot of my book in an abstract way. I could not believe that there is a song which catches the topic and the mood in such a way like Geisterfahrer does. I really was touched by that and it was the first time that I could FEEL my book. So this was the first time I wrote about TH in my blog and how it influences the writing on Durch die Nacht.

THEurope: How was the moment when you saw Bill on Dsquared2 Catwalk?

Emily: This was amazing because I had the feeling to see the angel of my second book as a person. I plotted this book from the 24th – 27th of December 2009 but I was not able to see my characters at this moment. This was the second wake up call and once again it was connected with TH. Everything was perfect. The hair, the make up and the clothes. The modern Ziggy Stardust as an angel – this was the moment I could visualize my angel character for the first time.

THEurope: Have the character inspired in Bill an important role in one of your books?

Emily: Yes. He is the main character. The whole book is about this angel. To be concrete, it is like the vampire trilogy “Eulenflucht” also a trilogy, but about angels. So this angel will appear in every single book of the trilogy as a main character.

THEurope: Would you like the band know about your book?

Emily: This would be interesting to get to know if they like the idea. But I do not expect that they hear about it or have the time to read it. ;-)

THEurope: How it goes the idea of the blog into you mind? Why you do it?

Emily: As I mentioned before, I am a huge vampire and fantasy fan. 2 friends of mine run this twilight page and they knew about my book I planned to write. So they found it was a good idea to blog about development of the book until it gets published.

THEurope: When do you expect the first book will be published?

Emily: I hope that by the end of the year, maybe in november, it will be published. My exposee is at the agencies right now and so I wait for them to respond. I will finish “Eulenflucht – Durch die Nacht” by the end of March. In May I will start to write the first angel’ s book which will be dedicated to Bill.

THEurope: You haven’t got yet a plot of the book, but tell us something that you can discover us about the first book.

Emily: As I said before, of course there is a plot but I have to keep the details secretly until contracts are signed and an official short version will be published. The things I can tell are that the setting is in Germany, in Dresden and nearby the Northsea in 1945 and 2008. It’ s the perfect book for vampire, love story and Romantasy fans. On the first page a quotation of Geisterfahrer will appear to show my gratitude and respect to TH. During the story Tokio Hotel will appear in certain sequences. But this is still a top secret at the moment.

Emily Kays Books

The vampire romance trilogy „Eulenflucht – Durch die Nacht“

Emily cannot tell too much about „Eulenflucht – Durch die Nacht“ at the moment but a few details can be told. Many people ask her why she chose the title “Eulenflucht” (Owl Escape). It’s an old fashioned word from the northern part of Germany which means something like dawn or gloaming (the time when owls fly). Emily was thrilled when she read it because it was exactly the title she looked for her vampire trilogy. The settings of “Eulenflucht – Durch die Nacht” are in Dresden and the North of Germany.

But how did she find Tokio Hotel?

She has read some articles about “Humanoid” and she could not really imagine that Tokio Hotel can sound like Depeche Mode or New Order. Then she read the name Guy Chambers and from this point on she realized that this CD has to be something special, because he has worked also with Robbie Williams for a long time – and Emily is a huge Robbie Williams fan. She decided to go to a record store to listen to the CD – and was completely amazed. She was so amazed that in the end she bought the German and the English version of the album. When she came back home she listened to the songs and was astonished of the sound of Tokio Hotel. When she listened to “Geisterfahrer” she was absolutely shocked and flashed because this song was like her book. How could it be that the guys from Tokio Hotel know her book? She was so stunned and looked like a hypnotized rabbit on the cd – player. The people who really wanna get to something about the book should listen to „Geisterfahrer“. “Humanoid” is an album which is definitely one of her playlist. She thanks Bill, Tom, Georg and Gustav for the amazing album. In the book “Eulenflucht – Durch die Nacht” the song “Geisterfahrer” will be honoured in a very special way, because it is THE SONG. On the first page a quotation of “Geisterfahrer” will appear to show her gratitude and respect to TH. During the story Tokio Hotel will appear in certain sequences.

Right now her exposee is at the office of a great publishing house and Emily is awaiting an answer. By the end of March „Eulenflucht – Durch die Nacht“ will be finished and hopefully it gets published by the end of 2010.

The angel romance trilogy

The hommage to “the black angel of Milan”

Not only the fashion world was amazed by Bill’s catwalk debut – no, Emily too. She was completely impressed.

A few days after Bill’s terrific catwalk debut Emily blogged that her second novel won’t be the continuance of “Eulenflucht” but the first book of an angel trilogy. She had already plot but she could not visualize the protagonists at this moment. This was planned after finishing “Eulenflucht – Durch die Nacht” – but things changed.

She saw Bill in Milan and for her, he was HER „the black angel“ for the angel trilogy. She was stunned by his presence, hair and gesture. There was “her angel” of her book. She was absolutely shocked and got chickenpocks all over her body and noted about 1000 words down and collected several pictures of the show. Emily says: „Thank you Bill! Stay gold as you are and don’t let the people telling you what to do – you are art!”

The first book of the angel trilogy, is an hommage to Bill Kaulitz because of the angel protagonist. Emily will start to write the first of the angel books in May 2010. She hopes to finish it in October 2010. The trilogy has already got a name (the first book too).
